Templeton Historical Museum Society
Templeton burst into life as a classic boom town
in 1886 with the coming of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The advent of rail service to
the area caused massive land development, with most of the land surveyed for farms. The
plot for Templeton was part of the large Rancho Paso de Robles subdivision. Crocker, the
name of one of the railroad men, was originally chosen for the town name. Because there
was already a town with a similar name, Crocker was change to Templeton, the name of

Performing Arts Center -- Cal Poly
Our magnificent performing arts center is the
result of a partnership and a true spirit of cooperation between California Polytechnic
State University, the City of San Luis Obispo and the Foundation for the Performing Arts
Center. For more than 30 years, various groups explored the possibility of constructing a
performing arts center, but the vision did not truly come into focus until November, 1986
when the three partners entered into a unique agreement to do what no single entity could
do alone -- build a state-of-the-art performing arts center to serve the greater San Luis
Obispo community.
